Christianity and alcohol
I have come across Christians who drink alcohol claiming that drinking alcohol is not wrong because Jesus turned water into wine. Clearly I don’t agree with them and am not condoning drinking alcohol, mostly because it takes the ability to self-control and make the right decisions and due to its addictive characteristic.
“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,” Ephesians 5:18 NIV
This verse suggests that getting drunk is opposite of being filled with the Spirit.
“Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.”
Proverbs 20:1 NIV
This verse suggests that those who are led by wine and beer are stupid, hence drinking these may lead to stupidity.
“Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.”
Proverbs 23:20-21 NIV
This verses suggests that drinking wine may lead to poverty.
“In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange sights, and your mind will imagine confusing things.”
Proverbs 23:32-33 NIV
This verse suggests that wine may distort your senses and discernment.
But let’s revisit the verse those Christians who justify drinking alcohol use in their justification.
“and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside”
John 2:9 NIV
The problem with the argument is that, here it is better that wine was made, and didn’t say alcoholic drink.
Was that an alcoholic wine that Jesus created on that day? Does this act condone the drinking of alcohol? Was this wine fermented?
Clearly, this wine was not fermented as it was changed from water within seconds. This suggests that it was a non-alcoholic wine. Wine in the Bible could mean fermented wine or unfermented grape juice…
We know for sure even today that there is such a thing called non-alcoholic wine being sold at the grocery stores. Jesus could have created such a wine then at that wedding.
Can Jesus contradict himself? Nope, He can’t. He won’t discourage us from drinking alcohol and then go ahead and create one himself.
Clearly this is grey area that the devil will use as a loophole to lead God’s children astray.
If anything I said fail to discourage you from drinking alcohol and getting drunk… remember my this verse:
“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,” Ephesians 5:18 NIV
Remember, you don’t need to get drunk to have fun.
