Disadvantages are advantages
Advantages are conditions or circumstances that put one in a favorable or superior position; advantages give one the edge. Disadvantages are unfavorable conditions or circumstances that reduce the chances of success or effectiveness; disadvantages are pitfalls. These are conventional definitions we all know and are accustomed to.
Having dyslexia is considered a disadvantage as the one being diagnosed with this condition cannot read and comprehend as fast as an average person. I wouldn’t wish dyslexia on anyone as most dyslexics are labelled stupid and have to be relegated to special schools and being stigmatized. So, dyslexia is a disadvantage as it reduces the chances of success, or does it? The fact is, there are successful dyslexics in the world today, one of them being a billionaire founder of the Virgin group. His dyslexia was one of reasons he didn’t waste time with multiple degrees and qualifications he doesn’t need to be a billionaire, qualifications that would have gotten him stuck in a rat race and behind a desk. Instead, his dyslexia got him focused on being an entrepreneur at an early age and ‘carving’ his way to billions of dollars. He turned his pitfall into an edge.
Being sexually abused may be considered a disadvantage. I believe it is the most painful and disempowering experience that could happen to someone and I would not wish that on anyone. Many might use this experience as an excuse to be promiscuous and lead a mediocre life. Many more may never recover from it and would live with the pain and feeling sorry for themselves for the rest of their life. Yes, this is a disadvantage.
However it depends on who you are and your mindset. I know the famous lady who decided to speak out. She spoke out about abuse and many other issues in her talk show where she encourages many of her guests to do the same. She is a billionaire. She didn’t allow this disadvantage to remain a disadvantage for the rest of her life.

God is able to take our disadvantages and turn them into greatness, our pain into pleasure and our embarrassment into victory. So, what we consider a disadvantage is only a disadvantage if you choose to let it be an excuse for you mediocrity, justification for unfulfilled life and dreams. Most of the people we know today who are successful and famous, turned their so called disadvantages into success, they use their disadvantages as the reason to be better than their circumstances, as an impetus to be outstanding.
Today let’s redefine the disadvantages together. From today a disadvantage mean; a reason to be better than who I was yesterday, the stepping stone to my success, the pain and discomfort I can to endure before my breakthroughs, the impetus to be greater than who they thought I could be. Disadvantages can be advantages.
Go ahead an call me a ‘previously disadvantaged’ if you like. I use this label as a catapult and not as an excuse. Disadvantages are advantages if you want them to be.
