Serve
Not long ago I availed myself and ‘temporarily denied my little boy his time with daddy’ so I could distribute church pamphlet on the street. My accolades, qualifications, status and size of my bank account did not matter at all, because I understood that God is not a respecter of persons! Many wouldn’t like to be seen distributing pamphlets on the streets of Hillbrow as that ‘would cramp their style’ or ‘mess with their image’.
Usually when we drive down the streets in our expensive cars we look down on and/or get irritated by those who come to our windows trying to push whatever pamphlet they have. We tend to look the other way intead of what they are trying to give or tell us about! If you are like me, you are guilty of this and have done it more than once and are likely to do it again!
Tables/roles turned and I was the one trying to give pamphlets away. What a humbling experience.
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” James 4:10 NIV.
I would do it again given a chance as there is nothing to be ashamed of when working in the house of our Lord! Is there?
“Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.” Luke 9:26 NIV.
I don’t know how many people I reached out to on that day who actually heeded my invite and came to church. Even if it is one soul that came to church and heard the Word of God through my invite, that’s more than enough for me!
“I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over on sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” Luke 15:7 NIV.
So, when was the last time you invited someone to church? Do your colleagues and friends know you are a Christian or are you keeping it a secret?
Pray with me this short prayer:
Father God, I want to serve You and serve in my church without shame and without excuses. I want You to help me get rid of unnecessary distractions and my useless busy-ness! Make me more like Jesus Christ, Your beloved Son You sent to serve without shame and without fear of persecution! Thanks You Jesus for showing us a way and living as a perfect example of service to follow! In Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
Great piece Dr, we must serve more to walk in Jesus’ shoes
