Motivation is usually considered an energy that gets us to take action. It is one of the things we need to get up in the morning and look forward to the day ahead, or is it? Without motivation or inspiration most of us may not get out there and do what we need to do.
However, the source of motivation is more important than motivation itself.
If we expect someone to motivate us into doing something or reaching our goals then the motivation for today may not be enough for tomorrow. I think such motivation is like a hot bath, it eventually gets cold. If we rely on this kind of motivation to do anything, then we may never get to do much.
Internal motivation (or values-induced motivation, I call it) on the other hand is the motivation to do what we value the most. Imagine you value fast cars and you were invited to test drive your favorite super-car without any cost to you; wouldn’t you be motivated to go? On the other hand, imagine waking up in the morning going to the monotonous job you don’t enjoy, working for the boss you don’t get along with and for a meagre salary. Would you be motivated to go?
Moreover, If you don’t value success, you wouldn’t bother or get motivated to stand up and work for/ at it. If you don’t value marriage you would be less motivated to get married, right?
We are more motivated to reach goals that are aligned to our highest values, that is, if we think reaching those goals is the most important thing to do. The interesting thing is, we are more persevering against the odds if and when we do what we value the most than otherwise. Our attempt to reaching any other goal not aligned to our values might cause us to quit in the face of adversities and hence the exercise would likely be futile. So, ask yourself these questions:
– What are my goals?
– How motivated am I in reaching them?
– Are my goals aligned to your values?
– Would I persevere no matter what until I reach my goals?
Increase your success and motivation levels by chasing goals more aligned to your highest values! Attempt any other goal at your our risk! Now you understand why you are so irritated and hit the snooze button more than once when your alarm clock goes off in the morning.
