WHEN THE ROCK CRUMBLES
Simon Peter was one of Jesus’ disciples and Apostle. Few things we know about Peter’s credentials are;
1. He was renamed (the rock) by Jesus:
And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone. -John 1:42
2. He was chosen by Jesus:
When morning came, he called his disciples and CHOSEN twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), and his brother Andrew; and James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor – Luke 6:13-16
3. He was the trusted:
Matt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon THIS ROCK I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
4. He lacked understanding of the things of God sometimes:
Matt 16: 23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
5. He walked on water:
Matt 14:29 So he said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.
Such a great resume and impressive credentials…
6. And then the rock crumbled;
Luke 22: 57 But Peter denied it: “Woman, I don’t know him!” 58 Then a little later someone else saw him and said, “You are one of them too.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”… 60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” At that moment, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
There is a saying that goes; When days are dark, friends are few. Well, very few people would be willing to die with you, let alone for you! Peter couldn’t. He lied to save his life. Many of us would have done (or has done) the same thing, we would choose our life over someone else’s, we would abandon others at the time of needs!
There would be times when your life is turned upside down. You will be forced to look around you to see who’s there to help, there would be few to none! Most of us have been there before and would probably be there again! Everyone in leadership position, including pastors, have experience this in some form or another.
Don’t despair though, it happened to Jesus, and it can happen to you! He is omniscient and he chose Peter, yet Peter abandoned Him to save his life! The rock crumbled! Alliances and loyalty got tested and failed, and usually do! It is human nature; when push comes to shove, we tend to choose our lives over anyone else’s. We are even capable if killing someone to save our own lives.
Just remember, God is ALWAYS by your side. Even though you might not see and feel Him around, He is always there. The teacher is always quiet during the examination. All you have to do is to remember what He taught you, His words, what he has helped you though and taken you from, as that would help you pass through the examinations.
Yes, the rock will crumble if God is NOT that rock, the center of your trust, center of your life! He alone is THE ROCK that never crumbles (Psalm 18:2, Psalm 78:35, 1 Corinthians 10:4). Put you trust in and give your loyalty to God, more you do to man! You are blessed to have Him as your father.
